The designation “ATM” has become, over decades, synonymous with automatic cash for the generality of the Portuguese. However, with the proliferation of new bank terminals, managed by private companies and linked to international networks, not all machines that allow you to raise money work with the same rules. The difference between using a multibanco network terminal and a “generic” ATM can be invisible at first glance, but it is directly reflected in the number of available operations and, above all, the costs that may fall on the user.

Created in 1985 and managed by SIBS, the Multibanco network integrates all banking institutions operating in Portugal. Its terminals allow more than 60 features, including state payments, transfers, donations, passes loading and automatic NIF. According to the public, this network covers thousands of terminals spread throughout the national territory, mostly installed in bank branches.

The so -called generic ATMs cover three types of equipment: those of the banking institutions themselves, the remote (in shopping centers, gas stations or public places) and independent terminals, mainly vocated for tourists.

Not all terminals are equal

Although visually similar, TMJ terminals differ in their origin and operating model. According to the public, many of the generic terminals, such as Euronet, ATM Express or Cashzone, are managed by foreign operators or private structures that pay lace to local traders in exchange for the installation of machines.

These equipment, although linked to the SIBS network for processing, are often associated with international networks such as Visa or Mastercard. For this reason, they may have costs added by operation, especially in international cards.

ATM: The most complete system

The Multibanco network remains for national users the most complete and economically advantageous option compared to TMA terminals. According to Decree-Law No. 3/2010, operations carried out with national debit cards at MB terminals are exempt from commission, except in case of use of credit cards, where the collection may take place.

Shared management between major banks allows you to reduce operating costs, ensuring a broader service offer, even for customers from different banks.

ATM Express and the focus on Tourism

Initially directed to tourists, the ATM Express system was launched by SIBS itself to compete with the entry of foreign companies such as Euronet. Although it accepts national cards, it offers fewer functionality than the ATM, the main focus being surveys with or without presentation of the exchange rate.

These terminals have been installed in commercial zones and now also in parishes with less population density, with costs assumed by municipalities, the newspaper explains Public.

Foreign networks with commercial focus

Euronet and Cashzone networks are operated by international companies and are mainly directed to foreign users. Installed on façades of stores or tourist locations, they accept national and international cards, but with a clear length of credit cards.

According to the public, these networks recorded criticism due to the way they process double functionality cards (debit and credit), often opting for credit aspect – which entails higher costs for the user, without being fully aware of the option made.

Not always free

Although the cash survey in Portugal is, as a rule, free for residents, it depends on the machine used and the type of card. The newspaper recalls that independent terminals can charge a “surcharge”, an additional rate visible on the screen before the operation confirmation. If the user does not accept, he can nullify the process at no cost.

Commissions, exchange rate presentation (CDD) and surveys vary by card issuer, machine operator and contract with the international network.

What to check before using a terminal

Consumers advise to always look for the ATM logo before performing any operation. For those who use international cards or national credit cards, it is recommended to read the conditions that arise on the screen before proceeding.

If in doubt, the ideal is to consult the bank previously or use only terminals located in bank branches, which tend to be safer and more transparent in the collection model.

Differences that directly affect the pocket

Although all these machines allow you to raise money, their origin, associated network and commissions profile can vary significantly. Familiarity with the expression “ATM” can induce error, and expensive to those who do not pay attention to the terminal they are using.

With the evolution of the sector and the growing presence of foreign operators, the distinction between TMJ and ATM is becoming increasingly relevant to the informed consumer.
