Lisbon-Minister Gilmar Mendes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), responded this Friday (4) to criticism of the Lisbon Forum, an event that brings together Brazilian and international authorities in the Portuguese capital. In a press interview at the end of the meeting, he went straight: “No one comes here to do the wrong thing, you know that.”

Gilmar defended the suitability of the event, which this year had a record of participation, with about 3,000 entries and more than 500 speakers. “The institutions that support the forum have absolute tranquility about this, we have no problem with this issue,” he said, in reference to charges for more transparency.

According to the minister, most guests traveled on their own. “We do not pay for a passage, except those who need support. We do not pay for a passage or hotel of most speakers,” he said, rebutting questions about any irregularity. “You are witnesses, the opening we give to the media is total, because no one is afraid of anything.”

“If you want, they can continue to call ‘Gilmarpalooza'”

Commenting on the closing of the Lisbon Forum, Gilmar Mendes celebrated the success of the event and stated that this was “perhaps the most perfect edition” of the 13 already held.

The meeting brought together more than 3,000 entries, with the participation of more than 500 speakers, including governors, senators, deputies and international experts.

“It’s a complex engineering, but it demonstrates the general interest in discussions,” said Gilmar. “We saw a real immersion in the debates, with people participating intensely over the three days.”

He also highlighted the growing internationalization of the Forum, with the presence of representatives from the United States, Italy, Germany, Spain and Argentina, and the participation of more than 150 journalists from Brazil and abroad.

Gilmar also played with the event’s informal nickname: “If they want, they can continue to call ‘Gilmarpalooza’.”

The next edition of the event is scheduled for July 2026, with no date set.
