New Social Tariff of Electric Power Becoming valid from this Saturday

Starts to apply from this Saturday (5) the new social tariff of which provides for free to families benefiting from the and have a monthly consumption of up to 80 kWh. According to the federal government, the benefit will grant the total free of the light bill to 4.5 million families. Another 17.1 million families who are also entitled to social fare will not need to pay for the first 80 kilowatts-hours (KWh) consumed each month.

Due to the rules of the fare, approved by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), the consumers benefited by the social tariff who have three -phase facilities and use up to 80 kWh per month are entitled to gratuity. In this case, only costs not associated with the energy consumed, such as the contribution of public lighting or the tax on the circulation of goods and services (ICMS), in accordance with specific legislation of the State or Municipality where the family resides.

For consumers who have three -phase facilities and use over 80 kWh per month, the network availability cost remains 100 kWh. In this case, the consumer will need to pay a difference if it uses between 80 kWh and 100 kWh. Availability cost is the minimum amount charged by the distributor to remunerate the expenses with the power grid needed to transport the energy to the consumer.

Who is entitled to social tariff?

To be a beneficiary of the Electricity Social Tariff (TSEE) you need to fit in one of the requirements below:

  • Family registered in the Single Registry, with monthly per capita family income smaller or equal to half a national minimum wage;
  • Elderly 65 years or older or disabled people who receive the continued benefit of social assistance (BPC) and are in the Single Registry;
  • Family registered in the Single Registry with monthly income of up to three minimum wages, who have a person with disease or disability (physical, motor, hearing, visual, intellectual and multiple) whose treatment, medical or therapeutic procedure requires the continued use of appliances, equipment or instruments that, for their operation, require electricity consumption;
  • Also entitled to benefit are indigenous and quilombola families registered in CadÚnico, whose monthly consumption is up to 80 kWh/month.

It is not necessary to request the benefit

The social tariff is automatically granted to families who are entitled. To receive, it is sufficient that the person responsible for the electricity supply agreement (the one whose name is in the invoice) is among those benefited by the government programs described above. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to ask the distributor. The new social tariff is part of the Provisional Measure (MP) 1300/2025, published in May. The House of Representatives and the Federal Senate have up to 120 days to approve the measure or will lose the validity.
