The number of asylum applications in Germany fell by 45 % compared to last year. The authorities attribute success to new border controls and changes in politics.

The number of asylum applications in Germany has decreased significantly in the first half of this year. In the period from 1 January to 30 June 2025, 72,818 formal asylum applications were submitted, which is almost 45 percent less than in the same period last year (132.201 applications). This stems from the data of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) published on Saturday, informed by DPA.

The persons who applied for asylum for the first time in Germany were 61,336. This is almost 50 percent less than in the same period last year.

In addition to the gradual introduction of stationary controls at all German ground borders to this development, the measures taken by the Balkan states have probably also contributed to reducing illegal migration.

Success attributed to a new policy

Another factor is the development in Syria, where the long -time dictator Bashar Assad was overthrown in December 2024. Syria, where the most asylum seekers came after the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, was placed second behind Afghanistan in the first half of 2025.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who has been in office since the beginning of May, sees in this development confirmation of the correctness of his migration policy.

“These are the clear successes of turnover in migration policy. We continue our journey to put migration from head to feet,” Dobrindt told Bild.

Already in 2023, Germany began border controls to prevent migrants without the necessary documents. After the onset of the new Federal Government, the controls have expanded and tightened the rules – people who want to apply for asylum may now be refused.
