Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala, suffered a fracture in the left leg fibula during the club’s World Cup quarterfinals against Paris Saint-Germain, and will be removed from the lawns “for a long time,” the German club announced on Sunday (6).

“This serious injury and the prolonged absence is a real shock for Jamal and for all of us,” said Bayern sports director Max Eberl, quoted in a statement. The club also said he will undergo surgery soon.

According to German press, the recovery time will be four to five months, and Musiala could return before the holiday stop.

In the final moments of the first half, Musiala was between defender Willian Pacho and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in a divided. The Italian goalkeeper fired the ball, but fell on the leg of the Bayern player, which caused the injury.

“He shouldn’t go out that way. It’s very risky. He took the risk of hurting his opponent,” said Bayern goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer, who added that he asked the Italian to talk to Musiala after the bid, which he did. Before that, Donnaruma had already brought to his head, looking shaken after the play.

Musiala will also be out of the next three FIFA dates (September, October and November), when the Germany team will play for the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

“Jamal’s injury is a big shock for all of us, mainly because he has just returned after a muscle injury. We wanted the best for surgery and a good and quick recovery,” commented German coach Julian Nagelsmann in a note from the German Football Federation.

PSG won the match 2-0 and faces Real Madrid in the semifinals of the competition.
