BRICS countries will express “serious concerns” with protectionist climbing and unilateral trade measures, in a reference to Donald Trump’s tariff war, according to the final statement of leaders gathered in Rio de Janeiro.

“We have expressed serious concerns about increasing unilateral tariff and non -tariff measures that distort trade and are inconsistent with the WTO (World Trade Organization) rules,” says an excerpt from the statement, obtained by CNN.

Although there is no direct mention to the United States, people involved in the statement state negotiations say Trump was the target.

In addition, there are references to protectionism “under the pretext of environmental motives”, which refers to measures taken in the past by the European Union against products of Brazilian agribusiness.

The EU anti-dismay law, which should be in force in early 2026, affects a list of products ranging from meat and soybeans produced in Brazil to palm oil manufactured in Indonesia (newly introduced to BRICS).

“The proliferation of trading restrictive measures, whether in the form of indiscriminate increase in rates and non -tariff measures, or protectionism under the pretext of environmental objectives, threatens to further reduce global trade, interrupting global supply chains and introducing uncertainty in international economic and commercial activities,” says another excerpt from the statement.
