The Israeli Prime Minister said on Sunday (6) that his meeting with on Monday (7) in Washington could “help” reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and to free the hostages that are still in Palestinian territory.

From this Sunday, Qatar receives a new round of indirect negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas to try to reach an agreement in this regard. “I believe the meeting with President Trump can certainly help to advance the result we all expect,” said Israeli Prime Minister at Ben Gurion airport, near Tel Aviv, before traveling to Washington.

In Palestinian territory, devastated by almost 21 months of war, Gaza’s Civil Defense announced that 26 people died in Israeli bombings. The war began with the attack of Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023 in southern Israel, which motivated an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip that left tens of thousands of dead and caused a serious humanitarian crisis.

Israeli negotiators traveled on Sunday to Doha, according to public broadcaster Kan. Negotiators must “continue their efforts to recover our hostages based on the Catari proposal that Israel accepted,” the office of Prime Minister Netanyahu said. The Israeli government, however, considered “the changes that Hamas wants to make in the proposal” of truce driven by the United States have “unacceptable, with the mediation of Qatar and Egypt.

60 dias

According to Palestinian sources, the proposal presented to Hamas includes a 60 -day truce, when the group would free 10 Israeli hostages still alive and return several bodies in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel. Of the 251 people kidnapped on October 7, 2023 during the Hamas attack on Israel, 49 remain in captivity in Gaza, 27 of them declared killed by the army.

The sources stated that Hamas requires changes in the proposal, including an improvement in the removal mechanism of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip, guarantees that fighting will not resume during negotiations and that the UN and recognized international organizations will again distribute humanitarian aid.

In addition, Hamas wants the reopening of Rafah’s passing point, on the border between track and Egypt, which Israel controls since May 2024 to allow the removal of injuries. US President Donald Trump, who will receive Netanyahu on Monday in Washington, said an agreement could be reached “next week.”

This Sunday, before traveling to the United States, Netanyahu met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who pointed out that “the prime minister has an important mission: to advance an agreement to bring all hostages home.” In Rio de Janeiro, where he opened the BRICS summit meeting this Sunday, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, asked the countries not to remain “indifferent” to Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza.

Attacks

In the Gaza Strip, where two million inhabitants live, according to the UN and several NGOs, 26 Palestinians died in Israeli bombings on Sunday, Mahmud Bassal, Civil Defense spokesman for the territory, said. An attack hit a house in the neighborhood of Sheikh Radwan, in the city of Gaza, north of the Enclave. The neighbors had to remove the bodies from the victims of the rubble, according to AFP correspondents.

Al Shifa Hospital received at least 10 bodies, which remained on the floor, covered with plastic shrouds. Beside them, several relatives recited funeral prayers without containing the tears. The Israeli army said it would not be able to comment on any attack without the precise geographical coordinates.

The attack by the terrorist group Hamas on October 7, 2023 killed 1,219 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP balance based on Israeli official data. More than 57,400 Palestinians died in the Israeli offensive in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Ministry of Health of the territory ruled by Hamas, numbers that the UN considers reliable.
