(Reuters)-Presidency special advisor, ambassador Celso Amorim, defended on Monday that Brazil did nothing against the United States to receive threats from tariffs and consider the country as a great partner.
“We didn’t do anything against the United States. We found the United States a great partner,” Amorim said in an interview with CNN Brazil.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s advisor also stated that Brazil does not intend to put tariffs on the US and that it would be a “foot shooting” if Americans start imposing rates on Brazilian products.

“Brazil is one of the few countries that have a deficit (commercial) with the US. So I think, honestly, that if they start applying tariff in Brazil, it’s a shot in the foot.”
Amorim’s lines come a day after US President Donald Trump threatens to impose additional 10% trade tariffs on countries aligning with BRICS policies, which he evaluated as contrary to the US.
“Any country that alienates the BRICS anti -American policies will have to pay an additional 10%tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thanks for your attention to this subject!” Trump said in a post on the Truth Social platform.
