There is a beach south of Lisbon that has been discreet for years, far from tourism maps and outside the suggestions of travel agencies. This is a ‘well-kept secret’ a few kilometers from the capital, protected by cliffs and accessible only to those who are willing to get off the easiest path.
We talked about Ribeira do Cavalo beach, located in the municipality of Sesimbra. According to the Meteored portal, it is the first of the wild beaches west of the village and one of the most emblematic of the Portuguese western coast.
Limited access, preserved nature
According to the same source, this beach stands out for having no road access. Reaching the sand requires choice: either by sea, by boat or kayak, or by a winding, winding track, starting in the immediate vicinity of the Sesimbra shelter port.
The publication explains that after the horse’s strong camping park, the paved road gives way to a dirt path. That’s where the car is parked and the walk begins. The route is about a kilometer and, although not complex, requires appropriate footwear. Slippers are not an option.
Rail one kilometer and an unexpected scenario
It should be noted that the rail is well marked, visible by the constant passage of visitors. Along the way, the vegetation is dense and the inclination requires some caution. However, in the short distance to the beach makes the effort accessible even to those who are not used to long walks.
Upon arrival, the scenario surprises: Turquoise Água, cliffs to frame the bay and the almost total silence. There is no beach support, restaurants or ambient music. There is only the sound of the waves and the landscape to lose sight.
Arrive by boat: the comfortable alternative
For those who prefer to avoid walking, there are also boat transfers departing from the port of Sesimbra. According to the same source, this option offers not only more direct access, but also a new perspective on the landscape. It is still possible to visit caves only accessible by sea.
Adds the publication that, on lucky days, it is possible to see dolphins on the coast of Arrábida, in a short crossing that combines leisure and nature.
Isolation and tranquility with a touch of adventure
Ribeira do Horse beach is protected by high cliffs, which gives it a natural shelter and a sense of isolation.
The place is suitable for swimming, exploring small caves and enjoying a picnic. The absence of trade makes it indispensable to bring food and water. The water is cold, even on the hottest days.
When to go and what to take
The best time to visit is in summer, when the waters are most inviting. However, the platform warns that at this time the influx is significant. For those who prefer more tranquility, the spring months and the beginning of the fall are more suitable.
According to the site, it is important to plan the visit carefully. Bring suitable shoes, sun protection and, above all, do not forget to collect the garbage before leaving. The conservation of this space depends directly on the behavior of those who visit it.
Preserve to continue to discover
Ribeira do Horse beach is not a space that visits ‘by chance’. It requires planning, willingness to walk and respect for nature. Maintaining this balance between demand and preservation will be essential to ensure that the beach remains accessible to next generations. As the publication remembers, the ideal is to “take only photos, leave only footprints.”
