On the second and last day of the 17th BRICS Summit, which takes place in Rio de Janeiro, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Monday (7) that it is unavoidable to promote the energy transition and zero deforestation.

“Our challenge is to align actions to avoid exceeding 1.5 ° C of the planet’s temperature increase. It will be necessary to triple renewable energy and duplicate energy efficiency. It is unavoidable to promote the fair and planned transition to the end of the use of fossil fuels and to zero deforestation“Said Lula.

According to the head of state, it is part of this challenge “enabling the necessary means of implementation, now estimated at $ 1.3 trillion, starting from the $ 300 billion already agreed in COP29 in Azerbaijan”.

The event that brings together the BRICS member countries in the state capital ends today with a statement on health and climate.

The busy weekend in Rio de Janeiro began with the BRICS Business Forum – led by CNI (National Confederation of Industry) – which brought together representatives from the private sector of the bloc countries on Saturday (5).

In addition to President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad also participated.

The Brazilians defended multilateralism, criticized protectionist policies and highlighted the Brazilian potential for global climate transition.

“Given the resurgence of protectionism, it is up to emerging nations to defend the multilateral regime of commerce and reform international financial architecture. BRICS follows as guarantor of a promising future,” Lula said at the time.

After the forum, President Lula moved to the Copacabana Fort, where he held six bilateral meetings with heads of state and government from BRICS countries.

The summit officially started on Sunday (6). Leaders from India, South Africa, Egypt, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia were welcomed by Lula at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art.

The presidents of China, Russia and Iran – XI Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Masoud Pezeshkian – did not attend, but sent representatives. The Russian leader also participated in video conferencing.

At the opening, Lula spoke about what he considers to be the main global crises: “With multilateralism under attack, our autonomy is again in Check. Black advances, such as climate and commerce regimes, are threatened,” he said.

The president also devoted his speech time to discuss world conflicts and the fear of a nuclear war.

“It is always easier to invest in war than in peace […] The fear of a nuclear catastrophe returned to daily life. The recurring violations of the territorial integrity of the states, to the detriment of negotiated solutions, undermine the efforts to not proliferate atomic weapons, “he said.

In the presence of Russian Chancellor Sergey Lavrov, Lula stated that “it is urgent that the parties involved in the war in Ukraine deepen direct dialogue with a view to a ceasefire and lasting peace.”

The positions defended by the Brazilian president coincide largely with a final statement, released during the afternoon of Sunday. The text, however, adopts a milder tone at some points. These were weeks of negotiations between delegates representing the bloc countries that resulted in more than 120 paragraphs and 38 pages.
