The president of the United States defended the former Brazilian president, posting on social media. He said that his former ally is a victim of a “witch hunt”, a term often used by Trump to describe his treatment by his political opponents.
Bolsonaru, who maintained friendly relations with Trump when both were in power, is being tried in Brazil for conspiracy charges with the aim of overthrowing the election result and preventing Louis Inio Lula da Silva in January 20.
“The only trial to be done is the trial by Brazilian voters – and is called elections. Let Bolsonaru quiet! ” Trump wrote on social networks.

In March, the Brazilian Supreme Court agreed to investigate the case against Bolsonaros and seven other persons, including several military officials, who are accused of conspiracy to prevent Lula in January 20.
Last month, during his trial before the Supreme Court, Bolsonaru denied that he had led the effort to overthrow the government, but admitted that he was attending meetings aimed at overthrowing the election result.
He said, along with his senior associates, they discussed alternative scenarios instead of accepting the results, including the possibility of activating military forces and suspending certain political freedoms, but as he said, these proposals were soon abandoned.
The allegations emerged from a two -year police investigation into the movement that challenged the election result and led to riots by Bolsonaru supporters in the capital at the beginning of 2023, a week after taking over Lula’s duties.
