A part of Türkiye is migrating from Asia to Europe

Asian part of Türkiye

The Anatolian region (Asian part of Türkiye) is moving from Asia to Europe at a rate of 2.2 cm per year, due to the dynamics of tectonic plates.

A Türkiye Stay on the Anatolian plate – A (smaller) tectonic plate that is between plates (larger) Arabica and Europe.

The interaction of these ‘larger’ tectonic plates is to pressure the ‘smaller’, causing the Asian part of Türkiye – Anatolia – Be migrating to Europe.

Detailing, the anatolian plate is pressed by the European plate to the north and the arabic plate south and east.

Due to this pressure, the plate Anatolia is forced to move west – towards Europe and escape from Asia – in a ‘migratory’ movement – known as “Tectonic escape”.

As a consequence, at this time, the Anatolian region is moving a rate of about 2.2 cm per year.

In the earthquake of, which affected in Anatolia’s oriental failurewhere the Anatolia and Arabica plates conflict, the soil moved 6 meters.

But, as explained, the main movement of the Anatolian license plate is the North Anatolia Failure – A transforming failure zone along which occurs lateral sliding between the plates.

North Anatolia Failure and remaining geological failures that cover most of the Turkish territory

It is this movement of the Anatolian plate, along this failure, which is doing as this region of Türkiye – also known as an Anatolian peninsula or Asia Minor – to be being pushed from Asia to Europe.

In addition, this failure enhances seismic activity, which is common in the region.
