Secretary of State imitator used AI in connections to foreign ministers

WASHINGTON (Reuters)-An impostor used an artificially generated voice to pass the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in contacts with three foreign ministers and two US politicians, according to a telegram seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

In mid -June, the person contacted the ministers, a US governor and a member of Congress through the Signal Message Application, according to the document. In two cases, voice messages were left and, in a third case, a text message invited the targeted person to communicate through the Signal, according to the telegram.

“The actor probably intended to manipulate the viewed individuals using AI text and voice messages, with the aim of gaining access to information or accounts,” said the telegram.

The Washington Post reported the case for the first time. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The state department’s telegram dated July 3 was sent to all diplomatic and consular posts and suggests that the team warn external partners on false accounts and imitations.

“There is no direct cyber threat to the department due to this campaign, but shared information with third parties can be exposed if the viewed individuals are compromised,” the document says.

The telegram referred to a second attempt in April that was attributed to a hacker linked to Russia that sought reflection groups, activists and dissidents of Eastern European and former state department employees.

The criminal copied a fake email address “@state.gov” in messages, as well as logos and brands used by the state’s diplomatic technology bureau, according to the document.

“The actor demonstrated broad knowledge of the nomenclature conventions and the internal documentation of the department,” he said.

In that approach, the person went through a state department official in messages sent to private Gmail accounts.

The State Department said the sector partners attributed this attempt to a cyber agent associated with Russia’s foreign intelligence service.
