Wind and hail damaged ships, cars, roofs and historical monuments.
A short, intense storm accompanied by tidal rain and hail, which hit a part of the Croatian city of Split on Tuesday morning, claimed 24 injured. These were minor injuries such as fractures, bruises and scratches, informs TASR based on OE24.AT and Index.Hr.
The storm also caused considerable material damage. A number of trees fell on cars. A podium ready for the open -air music festival rolled over to the busy parking lot.
Damage in the port
In the port, the ferry of Jadrolinija broke away from the anchor and carried by the wind crashed into the right side of the passenger ship, which shortly afterwards sank.
In the shipyard, a crane crashed on the production hall.
Strong winds seriously damaged the roof of the Poljud stadium, where the Hajduk Split football club plays its home matches as well as the playing area.
Damaged historical monuments
The Franciscan church and the monastery of St. Anton Paduánský also suffered extensive damage. In Peristyl of the famous Diocletian’s fourth century palace, water reached half a meter.
The Civil Protection Directorate announced that the emergency lines in the Split-Dalmatian county adopted by 14:00. More than 500 reports from citizens about the consequences of a strong storm. In particular, they concerned broken trees that damaged vehicles or blocked roads, flooded roads and cellars and damaged roofs.
Solin, the northern suburbs of Split, also hit a heavy storm on Tuesday, where it also caused great material damage.
