The (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) imposed R $ 173 million in fines in an operation against the city of Apuí, a municipality that has been record holder in the last 12 months.
According to data from INPE (National Institute of Space Research), there were 19 thousand hectares suppressed in the period, an area equivalent to 26,000 soccer fields.
In total, 87 infraction notices were made against 46 people for illegal deforestation (including areas of land reform and environmental preservation settlement), invasion and grabbing of public land, non -compliance with an anterior embargo or by preventing the regeneration of vegetation.
In total, 28,000 hectares were embargoed, and the owners of these areas were notified to remove from illegal breeding sites.
The operation took place during June and the information was passed on by Ibama to the Federal Prosecutor, who can file a lawsuit against those involved – punishments can reach up to one year in prison, plus a fine.
Ibama also found that non -eligible people to be beneficiaries of land reform were occupying lots in the Jumá settlement, the largest in Latin America.
“The inspection teams found that large deforesters have been acquiring several lots of settlers in order to concentrate land and form large properties, in clear deviation from the purpose of the settlement program,” says Ibama.
The operation generated reaction from local mayors, who got a meeting at the Civil House to complain about Ibama and asked for a moratorium for operations.
