Justice blocks R $ 49 million of deforesters that worked on the border of Acre with Amazonas

The Federal Court ordered the blockade of R $ 49 million in goods of four deforesters accused of destroying more than 2,600 hectares of the Amazon Forest in the Labrea region of southern Amazonas, an area that borders Acre and Rondônia. The information was released by the newspaper Estadão.

Case happened in the region known as Amacro/Photo: Reproduction

The decision was taken by the 7th Federal Environmental and Agrarian Court of Amazonas, following a request from the Union Attorney General (AGU), through the AGU RECOPRI program-Environmental Strategic Group. The accused are also prohibited from exploring any part of the degraded area, whose reforestation will be sought, and may not receive tax incentives or benefits.

The public civil action was based on infraction notices and reports prepared by Ibama, which pointed to the destruction of vegetation through the use of fire between 2004 and 2007. Despite the sanctions and embargoes applied at the time, the areas continued to be used irregularly.

According to AGU, the devastation occurred in three properties of the region and may have reached federal lands. The agency stresses that, regardless of ownership, the Amazon is a national heritage, protected by the Constitution, and any aggression to its ecosystem has a direct impact on international commitments made by Brazil on topics such as climate and biodiversity.

“The outcome, with the granting of urgent relief, unavailability of assets and suspension of tax and credit incentives, ensures the effectiveness of future reparation, strengthens the institutional credibility and ensures the restoration of degraded areas,” said attorney Natalia Lacerda, coordinator of the Environmental Nucleus of the Federal Regional Attorney of the 1st Region.

The names of those involved in the illegal deforestation scheme were not disclosed by the court.
