Never ignore an acronym in a menu: sisters regrets as soon as they reached the account [vídeo]

Lunch looked innocent, but ended up with a ‘fright’. Three US sisters decided to take a relaxed exit for lunch outside. They chose a restaurant by the sea, consulted the menu and placed the orders. What they didn’t know is that a small acronym in the menu would make all the difference, especially in the final account.

The case, which has quickly became viral on social networks, shows how a seemingly harmless detail can be expensive to those who are not used to the language of the most sophisticated menus.

As reported by the New York Post, the story took place at the Moonrakers restaurant in Beaufort, North Carolina, United States. Aribella Menold, 20, went to the restaurant with the two sisters and shared the episode on Tiktok, where the video already adds thousands of views.

No fixed price, no special promotion

The error was not choosing the dish or the amount commissioned. What confused the young women was the presence of the acronym “MKT” along with the name of one of the dishes in the menu, a common abbreviation in the American restoration that many customers are still unaware.

According to the The Post“MKT” means “Market Price”, ie market price. It is a acronym used for dishes whose value varies depending on the availability in the menu, quality or seasonality of the ingredients, such as shellfish or special cuts of meat.

When the value reaches the table

The sisters say they thought they paid between $ 20 and 30 per dish. The surprise came at the time of the account: the three dishes totaled $ 159. In the video shared on the networks, you can see the reaction of the young women, visibly incredulous when consulting the bead.

“We didn’t know what ‘Mkt’ wanted to say in the menu and we ended up paying dearly for it,” said Aribella. The moment they all put their hands in their mouths quickly became a meme shared by thousands of users.

Help came from the family

Despite the setback, the story had a friendly ending. According to the young woman, it was the grandfather who eventually assumed the expense. “Our grandfather eventually paid everything, he’s a dear,” he wrote in the video description.

In the comments on the publication, divided opinions emerged: some admitted not knowing what “MKT” means, while others considered that dividing $ 159 between three people is not, in fact, such a scandalous value.

Expressions such as “mkt” or “aq”

This episode was a warning for many users, who confessed to never having noticed or understood the abbreviations in the menus. Market Price is just one of several acronyms used to indicate variable prices. Another common, for example, is “aq” (to quotation), also used in Portuguese menus for seasonal dishes.

How to avoid surprises in the account

Experts always advise to ask the employee what the value of the “market price” marked dishes. These acronyms indicate that the price will be determined at the time of order, depending on the updated costs of the ingredients.

According to the gastronomy site, this practice is common mainly in fish and fresh seafood restaurants. Although legitimate, it can cause confusion if the customer is not aware.

Inform-be before asking

If in doubt, it is best to ask. Even in Portugal, some restaurants adopt similar practices, especially in coastal areas. Knowing what is ordering, and how much it will cost, you can avoid unnecessary embarrassment.

The story of the three sisters is a humorous (and educational) reminder for all who like to go out: not all menus say everything, but they can cost more than you think.
