This was the second time in two days that the Republican came out in defense of the Brazilian; pressure exerted by the United States is the main bet on the right to avoid a conviction by the former president’s STF
The president of the United States, defended the former president again (PL). In a new publication, the American again ranked investigations against Bolsonaro as “witch hunt” and asked him to be left alone. It was the second time in two days that Trump came out in defense of the Brazilian. “Leave the great former president of Brazil in peace. Witch hunt !!!” wrote the American president on his social network Truth Social. The message cited Trump’s first publication in defense of Bolsonaro, published on Monday, 7. At the time, Trump wrote that lawsuits against Bolsonaro are political attacks and that Brazil is doing something “terrible” against the former president.
The pressure exerted by the United States is the main bet of to avoid a conviction of Bolsonaro, who is responsible for the Federal Supreme Court () for the accusation of leading an attempt to coup after being defeated in the 2022 presidential election. The former president’s son (PL-SP) has graduated from the mandate to live permanently in the United States and try to articulate sanctions from the US government minister, rapporteur of the action. On Thursday, Moraes extended for 60 days inquiry open at the request of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) to investigate Eduardo’s performance before the US government.
“Almost midnight in Brazil and Donald Trump again posting the Lawfare against Jair Bolsonaro. Witch hunt!” Wrote Eduardo Bolsonaro. Lawfare is a term used in the United States to describe the use of the legal system to attack opponents. Trump’s statements and other authorities in his management have bothered the Brazilian government, which sees the attitude as an attack on the country’s sovereignty.
“The defense of democracy in Brazil is a theme that is responsible for Brazilians. We are a sovereign country. We do not accept interference or protection of anyone. We have solid and independent institutions. No one is above the law. Especially those who pay against freedom and the rule of law,” said the president released by the Planalto Palace after Trump’s first comment on Bolsonaro.
The STF did not position itself, leaving the institutional defense to the Brazilian executive. Behind the scenes, however, Supreme Court magistrates told Estadão’s column that Trump’s statement is “irrelevant” to Bolsonaro’s trial in the event of a coup attempt. On the same day Trump made the first comment, Florida’s court gave 21 days for Alexandre de Moraes to speak out in the process opened by the Rumble video platform and the company Trump Media & Technology Group, linked to the US president. The companies accuse the minister of censoring content published on these social networks by determining that Rumble suspend profiles of Brazilian influencers on the platform.
