The Turkish authorities arrested the Mayor of Chili (Silile), a small town in the northeast, belonging to the Republican People’s Party () of the opposition at dawn.
In addition to the arrest warrant at the expense of Mayor Ozgur Kampanday, the prosecutor’s office calls for the arrest of five other people in the context of investigations into their involvement in corruption cases.
The arrest of the Mayor of Chilis then comes to arrest Saturday, the Adanan and Antalya in southern Turkey and Antigiaman in the east.
On July 1, the former Mayor of Smyrna Tuz Soyer was also arrested, in the context of a warrant against 157 executives of the Municipality and the CHP.
This is the second major wave of arrests of mayors and executives of the CHP, after the arrest on March 19 of the Mayor of Constantinople.
So far, there are 16 mayors of the CHP and another is under home restriction. Together with today, a total of police operations have been made in 18 municipalities controlling the opposition party.
