Neither Phishing nor Skimming: Know the New Wondering on the ATM that is 'Emptying' Accounts and Learn how to protect yourself

An unusual image appearing on the screen of a multibanco box has generated restlessness among users. The warning, captured in a video that circulates on social networks, raises doubts about the possibility of the equipment being manipulated with criminal intention. With the increase of fraudulent schemes associated with automatic boxes, the concern is growing that this is another method used by burns to deceive disadvantaged victims.

According to Polygraph SIC, the video actually shows an unusual situation, in which a cursor appears at a multi -entry terminal. The recording is made by a citizen who realizes the situation and tries to alert others not to use the box. The tone of the video is alarming, and many interpreted the presence of the cursor as an unmistakable sign that the machine would be being remotely controlled by criminals.

The origin of the alert

There is no evidence that the machine in question was indeed compromised by computer criminals. The presence of a cursor on the screen may have several technical explanations, including maintenance tests or software updates. Still, the video became viral, contributing to the spread of the alarm among users.

The same source clarifies that multibanco terminals can sometimes present visible internal activity, such as cursors or technical menus, especially when being the target of remote maintenance operations. These procedures are performed by the management entities and do not mean, by themselves, an attempt to slop or computer attack.

Cursor can emerge for technical reasons

ATM Terminals are complex computer systems that, like any other, are subject to updates, error corrections and remote interventions. During these procedures, it is possible to appear cursors or graphic elements on the screen that are usually not visible to the user.

The same source explains that, although it seems strange, the visible cursor is not automatic proof that the system was compromised. This type of intervention is often done by terminal operators to ensure the proper functioning of the equipment. However, the video in question does not provide sufficient context to accurately determine what was happening in the machine.

Viral video without official confirmation

O Polygraph SIC also states that, so far, no official entity has confirmed that the box shown in the video was under the control of criminals. The warning “does not metam the card” may have been made by precaution by the author of the video, but is not supported by any technical or expert verification.

According to the same source, videos like this rapidly gain popularity on social networks due to their alarming character, even when the information transmitted is not confirmed. In such situations, the most recommended is to report the incident to the competent authorities, such as the Public Security Police or the entity responsible for the management of the terminal.

Authorities’ recommendations

Although the video in question does not prove the existence of an attack, the same source recalls that there are indeed a laundry schemes associated with ATM boxes. Authorities recommend that users be aware of signs of physical change on machines, such as loose card readers, suspicious cameras or false keyboards.

The same source points out that, if in doubt, the user should avoid using the machine and immediately contact the bank or police. Staying informed and acting prudently remains the best way to avoid fraud, without giving in to the panic generated by videos whose authenticity has not been confirmed.

So far there is no evidence of a widespread attack on ATM boxes in Portugal using the remote control type shown in the video. The circulation of alarming images can cause confusion and generate a sense of unjustified insecurity.

This case, however, serves to reinforce the importance of surveillance over possible attempts at slogans. According to the same source, any strange behavior on a multibanco machine should be communicated to the authorities and never ignored, even if there is no immediate confirmation of an attack.

Despite the impact of the video, no official complaints linked to this particular incident were recorded. The same source points out that the simple appearance of a cursor should not be interpreted as a confirmed attack, and more data must be gathered before making definitive conclusions.

The case is now being analyzed by the competent entities, but, according to the same source, there is no reason for widespread alarm. Machine verification and technical response to anomalous situations are part of the safety routine of Portuguese banking systems.

In short, although the video has caused concern, its interpretation as a sign of computer piracy is not so far supported by evidence. As mentioned, the presence of the cursor may originate from legitimate and non -criminal causes.

Still, experts continue to recommend caution and reporting anomalous behaviors in ATMs. According to the same source, being attentive and informed is the first step to ensuring transactions safety.
