Dozens of new fires broke out in Greece, firefighters are trying to minimize the risks of strong winds and drought. Some areas also report evacuations and electricity problems.

The Greek authorities reported on Thursday that dozens of new forest fires broke out in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, firefighters were in control of a large fire north of Athens during the night. TASR writes about this based on the DPA report.

“With daylight and extinguishing helicopters, we have to quickly extinguish the remaining outbreaks before strong winds are raised today,” a spokesman for firefighters said.

Evacuation on Thasos Island

The flames also hit the holiday island of Thasos, where the authorities preventively evacuated the hotel for dense smoke. Some parts of the northernmost Greek island in the Aegean Sea also affected electricity outages. According to firefighters, the fire managed to get under control.

The Greek Civil Protection Office has issued new warnings. Strong winds and long -lasting drought increase the risk that even small fires can quickly get out of control. For a large part of the country, the second highest level of risk of fire applies.

Fires were also reported from neighboring northern Macedonia and Greece sent two firefighters and auxiliary staff.
