Finance Minister Fernando Haddad accused the governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), of subservience in the face of the decision of US President Donald Trump of imposing 50% rates on Brazilian products.
For Haddad, the measure is an attack on national sovereignty with direct impacts on the São Paulo economy, especially the agro -industrial sector and the aeronautical industry.
“Either a person is a candidate for president, or is a candidate for vassal. And there is no space in Brazil for vassalage,” said the minister.

The statement was made during an interview with Portal Barão de Itararé, with independent media, in which Haddad commented on the effects of the new commercial sanction imposed by Washington.
According to him, the decision “not part of any economic rationality” and originates in political pressures of the Bolsonarist wing in Brazil.
“I don’t believe this situation will keep up. We are deficient with the United States by over $ 400 billion in the last 15 years. The measure is unsustainable from an economic and political point of view,” he said.

São Paulo at the front line of the damage
Haddad pointed out that the main damaged by the tariff are strategic sectors of the state of São Paulo. He mentioned, among others, the orange juice, a strong weight product on the São Paulo export agenda, and Embraer, symbol of the Brazilian technology industry, as direct targets of the measure.
“The far right will have to recognize that it gave a huge shot in the foot, because it is hurting the main state of the country, precisely São Paulo,” he said.
According to him, the productive sector is already articulating to seek departures with President Lula. “Agro, with the industry of São Paulo, which is the most affected, is united. We can not discriminate anyone at this time,” he said.
