After being called a “vassal candidate”, governor of São Paulo says that Finance Minister should “take care of the economy”
The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), said on Thursday (10.Jul.2025) that the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, “You have to talk less and work harder”. The statement was made during the launch of the 1st Line Train of Line Line of the Metro, hours after the petista called him “Candidate for Vassal”.
The exchange of criticism came on the wake of Donald Trump’s 4th (9.Jul) announcement (Republican). The president of the United States said he will impose on Brazilian products. Said one of the justifications for the measure is what he calls “hunt”In Brazil against former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
“I think he has to take care of the economy. If he took care of the economy, he would be doing well […] It is up to him to talk less and work harder ”said the governor of São Paulo when asked about the minister’s speech.
“We obviously need to sit on the table, put aside ideological issues, put aside political issues, set aside revanchism, narratives and work”completed the politician, who is an ally of Bolsonaro and potential candidate for the Planalto Palace in 2026.
Tarcisio was already the government of the president (PT) for having done “Little action” to curb the tariff imposed by the American.
“Candidate for Vassal”
In an interview with journalists on the morning of this Thursday in Brasilia, Haddad criticized Tarcisio and said he made a mistake in demonstrating support for Trump.
The governor of Sao Paulo has even used a cap with the president of the US president – ”Make America Great Again“. On Monday (7.Jul), he shared a post in which Trump defended Bolsonaro and said that the former Brazilian president should“ judge by voters ”.

“Either a person is a candidate for president or is a candidate for vassal, and there is no space in Brazil for vassalage”said Haddad this Thursday (10.Jul).
Vassago was a system of the Middle Ages in which one noble (vassal) swore fidelity to another more powerful (overlord) in exchange for protection and land. In practice, Haddad signaled that Tarcisio would be Vassal of Trump.
