Amnesty International considers “shameful and vindictive” US sanctions against Albanese

The NGO Amnesty International (AI) has described this Thursday as “shameful and vindictive” the sanctions imposed by the United States against the UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine, Francesca Albanese, which were announced this Wednesday by the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who accused the diplomat of “shameless anti -Semitism” and to carry out a “campaign” against Israel.

“The measures are a continuation of the Trump administration assault on international law and their efforts to protect the Israeli government from accountability at all costs,” said the general secretary of Amnesty International, Agnès Callalard.

Amnesty International stressed that special rapporteurs are not appointed to “please” governments, but to defend human rights and international law, especially at a time when “the very survival of the Palestinians is at stake in the occupied Gaza Strip.”

The Italian Francesca Albanese is the UN Special Rapporteur over Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territories and has harshly accused Israel of committing war crimes, including a genocide, in the Gaza Strip.

The sanctions imposed by the United States obey an executive order signed in February by the president, Donald Trump, to block assets and withdraw the US visa to anyone who collaborates in the investigation of the International Criminal Court (CPI) on Israel.

In this regard, Callamard said that these measures are framed in a series of policies adopted by the US administration to “intimidate and silence those who dare to speak in defense of the human rights of the Palestinian people.” AI also urged the states to reject “vigorously” these sanctions, qualified as “shameful and vindictive”, already exert the maximum diplomatic pressure on the US government to revoke them.
