Still recovering from the fright, Olympique Lyonnais saved its place in the French football elite against the National Management Control Directorate (DNCG) Appeal Committee, but will have to reduce its budget for next season.

By avoiding a humiliating relegation for the second division, the club best known as Lyon also managed to ensure his presence in the Europa League.

Lyon had been relegated administratively on June 24 because of their debts.

Lyon’s new leaders Michele Kang and Michael Gerlinger have been able to convince DNCG, the country’s financial supervision of the country’s financial supervision, which the club has the resources needed to compete in season 2025/2026.

Kang and Gerlinger, who took the management after the departure of American businessman John Textor of the Presidency, spent several hours at the headquarters of the French Football Federation (FFF) on Wednesday (9). Textor also owns Botafogo’s SAF.

In a statement published after the resolution, the new board stated that it was “determined to ensure serious management in the future.”

“Today’s decision is the first stage to restore confidence in Lyon,” the note adds.

At a news conference hours later, Michele Kang said he was “very proud” of success of what he considers “a collective mission.”

“We endeavored to the fullest, we had 110% of ourselves,” said the president of Lyon.

The relegation posed a serious risk of breach for the club, as its budget, stadium and cast were far superior to the usual on Ligue 2.

Players exits

Lyon has made several spending cuts in recent months and has received financial contributions from its shareholders. An agreement was also closed to postpone debt payment, and about 100 employees left the club within a voluntary dismissal plan.

The club’s payroll was also reduced to about € 30 million (R $ 191.7 million) with the end of contracts and transfers of several of its highest paid players (Alexandre Lacazette, Nicolás Tagliafico, Anthony Lopes, Maxence Caqueret, Rayan Cherki).

But it’s not enough: Lyon needs to reduce its sheet to about € 75 million (R $ 479.4 million) – before players and layoffs, was € 160 million (R $ 1 billion).

To this end, Michele Kang presented an austerity plan with more expenses, players loans and wage ceilings.
