Buenos Aires, Argentina (Folhapress) – Argentines often meet on the July 9 independence holiday to eat Locro (usually soaked with meat, corn and pumpkin), breaded and pastelites with chocolate, but since last year, he had been trying to create a new tradition for the date.
In 2024, Milei summoned governors and allies to sign the May Pact (although occurred in July), a gesture of strength and support to the government’s decrees at the Tucumán House, the historic building in the north of the country, where independence was proclaimed.
Last year, with the exception of the hardest opposition to the government, provincial leaders arrived in Tucumán to seal a political alliance with Casa Rosada, ensuring the approval of the Bases Law and the Fiscal Package, giving governability to Milei in Parliament.
Even former President Mauricio Macri, whose alliance with Milei is marked by an internal dispute by the right command, appeared -then found that there was no place for him in the main part of the audience.
The scenario is now different. This year, I mailed to repeat the event, but ended up giving up at the last minute. The official explanation was that the plane trip to the province on Tuesday (8) had to be canceled because of the fog, but the opposition points out that he feared a emptied event, after only 3 of 24 governors confirmed presence.
“The trip that the president of the nation would make today with his office and other government officials to Tucumán is suspended. The reason for the decision is in the reports received by the Military House and the Argentina Air Force, which refer to the climate situation that prevents the relevant flights,” the Presidency spokesman, Manuel Adorni, wrote.
The city celebrates the date with a traditional vigil, which begins at dawn. Without Milei, the ceremony was led by the governor, Osvaldo Jaldo.
“The conditions to return were not guaranteed,” said the president by justifying his absence for weather conditions during an interview with a radio.
Milei assured that her intention was to travel to Tucumán and ruled out that the absence was due to the fact that most governors decided not to attend the official ceremony. “The speculation they want to do don’t matter,” said the president.
He also attacked the governors, saying that they only want more resources with the intention of breaking the country.
“There is a huge perversion on the part of some governors, just as we have lowered taxes, they increase them. As we make a great effort to reduce taxes and return money, they appropriate it.”
Last week, the provinces of the provinces presented in the Senate two bills to distribute the Treasury resources and the tax on fuels. The project could be approved on Thursday (10).
Regional forces also threaten not to shield the government in the veto to update pensions, if the project is approved in Congress, which enraged Milei.
If the local governments rebellion is successful, Casa Rosada has warned that it plans to veto any project that changes its zero tax deficit program, while the governors argue that Milei’s numbers are given at the expense of withdrawing funds from the provinces.
While the president missed the celebration in San Miguel de Tucumán, his deputy and now disaffection, Victoria Villarruel traveled to the province to participate in the festivities, without having an official confirmed agenda.
With the absence of the president in official events for independence, the former Minister of Economics and candidate defeated by Milei in 2023, Sergio Massa, took the opportunity to criticize the opponent.
“On July 9, 1816, the will of a people was declared: recovering rights as a free and independent nation. Can a country that delivers its resources be sovereign? A country that does not trust the talent of its people can be independent?” Asked Massa on their social networks.
