In response to the recent threats from US President Donald Trump from imposing up to 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reaffirmed Brazil’s sovereignty and the independence of his institutions. In response on social network X on Wednesday night (9), Lula pointed out that the country will not accept being protected by any nation.

“Brazil is a sovereign country with independent institutions that will not accept being protected by anyone,” said the president. Lula stressed that the judicial process against those who would have planned a coup d’état is the exclusive jurisdiction of Brazilian courts and is not subject to external interference or threats that may hurt the independence of national institutions.

The president also made a point of differentiating freedom of expression from aggression or violent practices, reinforcing Brazil’s commitment to respect for democratic freedoms. “In Brazil, freedom of expression is not confused with aggression or violent practices,” he said.
