Ian Bremmer, CEO of Consulting Eurasia, said President Donald Trump’s announcement of imposing a 50% tariff on products imported from Brazil constitutes a direct interference with Brazilian internal policy.
In his profile on social network X, Bremmer pointed out that it would be “intolerable” to any American political leadership, whether republican or democratic, to accept that another country adopted a similar stance against the United States.
Bremmer stressed that it is difficult to understand how the imposition of high tariffs on Brazil serves on US national interests: “Not that President Trump is claiming that this happens. But as it will cost to taxpayers, it is worth highlighting.”

Letter from Trump to Lula
In Trump announced that the United States will impose the new fare in part as retaliation for the current prosecution against former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The US President states that the new fare, which represents a significant increase over the 10% rate that the US imposed on Brazil in early April, was also motivated by the “very unfair business relationship” with the country, saying that it has been “far from reciprocal.”
The US president says that Brazil’s trade policies have caused “unsustainable commercial deficits against the United States,” which threaten US economy and national security.
