Ursula von der Laien: Today the vote on the censure proposal - the concessions and the division

More powers for its regions have been promised by the President of the European Commission, in an effort to get out of today’s vote on the proposal of mistrust against her in the European Parliament.

Although realistic, however, the German politician, who has been at the helm of the Commission since 2019, wants to overcome this particular Skopelos with the least possible losses.

In this context, although planning a wide revision of regional funding of nearly 400 billion euros, it appears to succumb to the pressures of fourteen governments of Member States, which a few days before the next seven-year-olds were voted on by the next seven years. And a strong budget and a distribution methodology based on regions … They will achieve long -term unity, competitiveness and convergence between EU regions. “

This position echoes similar warnings from EU commissioners- including the head of the budget of PTTTr Serafin and the Commissioner for Consistency Rafael Filo- who support the maintenance of a strong role for the regions in the new budget.

The vote

Regarding the vote, the Socialists and the Liberals, the two political groups that supported, in addition to the European People’s Party to which it belongs, its election a year ago threatened to abstain a year ago, in an attempt to obtain political commitments.

Even so, von der Layen is not in danger as the proposal needs a two -thirds majority in parliament to pass. However, if, as they all show, many MPs choose the path of abstention will be a blow to her image.

The turn of the socialists

Late last night, however, more specifically, the center -left MEPs appear to not support Thursday’s censure proposal against Ursula von der Layen, withdrawing their abstinence threats, according to two Madas political officials.

To gain their support, von der Layen promised to maintain the funds intended for social spending on the seven -year EU budget.

“Von der Lien made a significant concession to a matter that is especially important to us Socialists and Democrats,” said MEP Rene Repassi, head of the German SPD in parliament.

“I think he finally understood what was going on in parliament after Monday’s debate and saw the need to act,” he added. “We recognize this endeavor and take it into the debate on our final decision on how to vote tomorrow,” he concluded.

With this attitude, if finally confirmed, the Socialists give a lifeline to the President of the Commission, not in terms of the current outcome, but to the general attempt to reduce doubts in support of the Commission by parliament and its ability to promote the legislation it wishes.

It is also largely mitigated by the communication blow that von der Laien would accept if no center of the center coalition that supported her to be elected, except for the EPP, from which she came from, did not support her.

The division of European conservatives and reformers (ECR)

On the other hand, in the “opposition” camp, they are particularly interested in what is happening in the far -right political group of European Conservatives and Reformers (ECRs), which is the one that seems to have been more affected by the European Parliament by the proposal of censure against the European Commission under the European Commission.

Internal disagreements cause obvious rifts inside, as unlike other political groups, which adhere to a more or less common line, the conservatives appear deeply divided, with some members in favor and others against the motion of censure.

And the Polish Law and Justice (PIS), remaining consistent in their harsh criticism of the Commission President and College of Commissioners.

However, the biggest party in the team, Italy’s brothers, Italian Prime Minister Georgia members, made it clear that they would vote against the censure proposal. As the Italian MEP and co -chair of the team, Nicolas Priecini, told plenary session, the proposal is a “wrong” and “political gift to the opponents”.
