In a coastal village where the sea is a protagonist, the narrow streets and the stone boardwalks draw a typical scenario that goes down to a long beach surrounded by cliffs. This place keeps its roots alive as it opens to those who visit it, among fresh fishpractors and the grandeur of the waves that mark the pace of local life.
To Vila de Nazaré
The worldwide fame of giant waves takes place in Norte Beach, located in Nazaré, a Portuguese village that attracts more and more surfers and tourists.
According to the ekonomist, this notoriety is largely due to a geological phenomenon known as the Nazaré Cannon, a submarine formation with five thousand meters deep and 230 kilometers long, which causes the formation of large waves between November and February.
The power of the cannon and the giant waves
The presence of the submarine cannon creates unique conditions for increasing speed and wave height. These are divided, meet and form an imposing mass that challenges even the most experienced surfers.
In 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara broke records by surfing an estimated wave of 30 meters, capturing global attention to this natural phenomenon.
This event placed this village in a privileged position on the world map of surfing, attracting visitors who want to witness the strength of the sea and feel the adrenaline that this environment offers.
The site and the views that delight
In the past, the inhabitants lived in the promontory known as the site, which until the eighteenth century was more than one hundred meters above the beach line.
Today, the site is a mandatory passage point for those who want to enjoy unique panoramic views of the beach and the sea.
Access to the promontory is facilitated by a funicular that brings visitors to the Sítio viewpoint, an ideal place to enjoy the extent of the coast and the beauty of the Areal.
Nearby is the Fort of St. Michael the Arcanjo, where is the lighthouse that stands out, especially at the end of the day, when the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean.
History and Tradition in the Site Church
The Church of Our Lady of Nazareth, located on the site, is a baroque construction of the seventeenth century decorated with Dutch tiles. Inside, he keeps a sculpture of the Virgin who, according to the legend, was carved by St. Joseph, the father of Jesus, during the boy’s childhood.
This religious building is an important milestone for the village, representing not only the faith of its people, but also a link with the past and traditions that are still alive today.
Fishing life and local cuisine
The local economy remains linked to the sea, and fishing is one of the main activities in the region. The trade of fresh fish and seafood, captured daily, contributes to the fame of local cuisine, which is valued by residents and visitors.
According to the fishmakers who remain faithful to the tradition of wearing the seven skirts remain a common presence in the village, perpetuating an image of authenticity and culture that characterizes this territory.
