Liverpool announced, on Friday (11), that the number 20 shirt, which Diogo Jota wore, was retired forever.
The decision applies to both the professional and the base categories of the team. The decision occurred after many requests from fans, who wanted this eternal tribute to the Portuguese player.
In addition, later this Friday, Liverpool players paid a new tribute to Diogo Jota alongside the Portuguese striker’s family.
The entire cast walked to the makeshift memorial in front of the Anfield Stadium, where they met with the athlete’s parents and Jota’s wife, to deposit flowers and silence from the messages left by fans.
With shaken expressions, the players took a red and white rose, accompanying the family members who led the group in the tribute. Diogo Jota’s parents also lost André Silva, the striker’s brother and also a player in the tragic accident.
The memorial, spontaneously assembled by fans after the news of the brothers’ death, grows day after day. The presence of the cast reinforced the club’s connection to the family pain and the fans. No player spoke to the press during the act. The tribute occurred three days after the cast resumed preseason training.
The accident
Diogo Jota, striker of and the Portuguese team, died in a car accident in Spain at dawn on July 3.
The accident occurred near the city of Palacos de Sanabria, in the province of Zamora, made the vehicle catch fire. Diogo Jota and his brother were only identified thanks to the documentation in the car.
