Indication of the Attorney of Justice and aunt of the mayor of Maceió, João Henrique Caldas, had been pending since October 2024
The President (PT) decided to appoint the Attorney of Alagoas Marluce Caldas for the vacancy that is open in the (Superior Court of Justice). The decision must be published in a special edition of DOU (Official Gazette) later this Thursday (10.Jul.2025). The 2 have a meeting at the Dawn Palace this afternoon.
Caldas is aunt of the mayor of Maceió (AL), (PL). It is expected that, with the nomination of the prosecutor, JHC, as he is known, approaches the petista in the 2026 elections.
With the decision, Lula concludes the two nominations that were pending to the STJ. In May, the petista the Judge of the TRF-1 (Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region), Carlos Augusto Brandão. The magistrate’s nomination was supported by STF Minister Nunes Marques.
After publication in the DOU, Nominations to the STJ must be sent to the Senate. The Casa Alta CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) will evaluate the names in a sabbath, which still needs to be marked. If approved, they will be subjected to voting in the plenary and only then can Lula appoint them ministers.
The list has been with Lula since October 2024. Two vacancies have been opened with the retirement of the Ministers Farsete Magalhães, in January 2024, and Laurita Vaz, in October 2023.
Like Marluce, Laurita was part of the prosecutor before entering the STJ. Already Farsete was a member of a Federal Regional Court. Therefore, the president needed to appoint one member of the prosecutor and another of the judiciary.
In addition to Marluce, there were other names from the prosecutor listed for the vacancy: Sammy Barbosa Lopes, from Acre, and Carlos Frederico Santos, from the MPF (Federal Prosecutor).
Choices for the TSE
Indications for the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) are also pending and should leave soon. With the end of the 1st Biennium of Ministers Floriano Azevedo Marques and André Ramos Tavares, the electoral court opened two vacancies for the law of lawyers.
In May, the STF sent two triplices to President Lula. One of them was composed only of women. With this, the president is obliged to choose a woman. It was a strategy of the president of the TSE, Minister Cármen Lúcia, to increase the female presence in the judiciary.

- André Ramos Tavares, lawyer and minister of the TSE;
- José Levi do Amaral, former Secretary-General of the TSE and Cade (Administrative Council for Economic Defense);
- Cristina Maria Gama Neves da Silva, lawyer and judge of TRE-DF (Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District);
- Estela Aranha, lawyer and former secretary of digital rights at the Ministry of Justice; and
- Vera Lúcia Araújo, substitute minister of the TSE.
