New rules, the examination can be done from 30 years for women who have a family history of cancer, and from 40 years to those who will start the annual tracking
This Wednesday (9) the Commission of Social Affairs of the It took an important step in approving the bills PLS 3021/2024 and 499/2025. These proposals aim to reduce the minimum age to perform mammograms by both health and health plans. With the new rules, the exam can be done from 30 years for women who have a family history of cancer, and from 40 years to those who will start annual tracking. Currently, SUS offers mammograms to women between 50 and 69 years old, with a period of two years. The proposed change seeks to increase the chances of early diagnosis, as about 25% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Brazil are under 50 years. The implementation of this new age group should have an estimated financial impact of R $ 100 million by 2026.
The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) supports the proposal to start mammography at age 40, arguing that this anticipation can lead to a reduction of up to 50% in mortality among cancer patients. In addition, the second approved project ensures that women over 30 years old and have a family history of cancer in up to high school relatives can perform mammography tracking. Senator Daniella Ribeiro, from the PP of Paraíba, was responsible for including in the projects the requirement that health plans will perform unrestricted mammograms regarding the quantity or frequency for patients over 30 years old with family history or genetic mutations. With the approval of a terminative decision, the bills now go to the House of Representatives, unless there is an appeal requesting a vote in the Senate plenary.
