At the same time, Awn reiterated the requirement to complete the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from the Lebanese territory and indicated that Hizbollah’s disarmament would be addressed by a peaceful way.
Lebanese President Júzif Awn excluded the normalization of relations with Israel on Friday. However, he hopes that his country will be able to live in peace with his southern neighbor. In recent days, Lebanon and neighboring Syria have begun to normalize relations to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Gideon Saar. According to the AFP report, TASR writes about it.
“Peace means the absence of a war state, and that is what we care about Lebanon. As for the issue of normalization, it is currently not subject to Lebanese foreign policy,” explained Awn.
Past conflicts
Lebanon and Syria do not recognize Israel and have led several conflicts with him since 1948. So far, the last war in Lebanese territory between Israel and the militant Hezbollah movement ended in the ceasefire last November. According to the ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah is obliged to withdraw its fighters north of the Lithium River, approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border. Israel undertook to withdraw from all over Lebanon, but his soldiers remained on five points at the common borders, which he considered strategic.
Call for the withdrawal of Israel
In this context, Awn called for Israel to completely withdraw from Lebanon. Israeli troops in the south of the country, according to him, “prevent the complete deployment of the Lebanese army to the internationally recognized border”.
The Lebanese President also commented on the process of disarming Hezbollah, as the current government in Beirut is advocating that only state security forces in the country. In the implementation of this step, in his words, “the interest of the state and its stability will be taken into account in order to maintain peace and national unity”. According to AFP, he indicated that the disarmament of Hezbollah will not be enforced by force.
