The president of the, returned on Thursday (10) to attack the, with an additional 35%customs tariff, and criticized the neighboring country for rectaling with taxes. The announcement was made in a letter directed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, similar to those Trump sent since last Monday to about 20 countries. As in other cases, the rate adds to taxes applied to specific sectors, such as steel, aluminum and cars. “Instead of collaborating with the United States, Canada has taken reprisals with their own rates. From August 1, 2025, we will charge from Canada a 35% rate on Canadian products sent to the United States apart from all sectoral tariffs,” says Trump in the letter, published on the Truth Social platform.

“These rates can change up or down, depending on our relationship with your country.” In a message on social network X, Carnery replied that “the Canadian government has firmly defended our workers and companies” in negotiations with the United States. “We will continue to do this while we work until the deadline of August 1,” he added. Canada and Mexico were the first targets of the president’s tariffs since he returned to power in January. Trump accused both countries not to properly fight illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking, opioid responsible for a severe health crisis in the United States.

Tense negotiation

Canadian and Mexican products were initially affected by 25%American overcrowders, with a lower rate for the energy produced in Canada. But finally, Trump announced exemptions for products entering the United States due to the T-MEC, which covers a wide range of goods. Since then, Canada and Mexico have negotiated a trade agreement with the United States. Last month, Ottawa announced that he was abandoning his digital service tax, which would take effect on July 1, after Trump suspending conversations as he considered the rate “a direct scam” in the United States. Tension affects trade between the two countries. The proportion of Canadian exports to the United States fell to 68.3% in May, one of the lowest figures, according to Canada officials.

Trump’s letter was sent even with the improvement of relationships between Trump and Cary. The Canadian leader visited the White House on May 6 and had a cordial meeting with the US president at the Oval Hall. Both met again at the G7 summit held last month in Canada, where the leaders pressed Trump to turn back in their commercial investment.
