INPE records 2,090 km² of devastated area, 1st semester increase during Lula administration; Data were released on Friday (11.Jul)
Inpe (National Institute of Space Research) recorded an increase of 27% in deforestation alerts in the Legal Amazon in the 1st semester of 2025, totaling 2,090 km² of devastated area. The data were released on Friday (11.Jul.2025). This is the 1st semester growth verified during the current government of (PT).
In contrast, the cerrado reduced 9.8% in deforestation in the same period, from 3,724.3 km² in the first half of 2024 to 3,358.3 km² in 2025.
The growth of deforestation in the Amazon represents a reversal of the trend observed in the first half of 2024, when 1,645 km² of deforested area were identified. The information was collected by Deter (real -time deforestation detection system).
The states of Mato Grosso, Pará and Amazonas were the most affected by deforestation in the Amazon, totaling approximately 400 km² of impacted areas. Mato Grosso leads the ranking, responding for almost half of the total, with 206 km² of deforested area.
In a statement, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change stated that the fires registered in the Amazon from August to October 2024 had “strong influence”In new data on deforestation in the region.
“From January to June 2025, areas on alert of ‘deforestation with vegetation’, which correspond to fire -affected places, grew 266% compared to the same period of the previous year. The increase is linked to the atypical fires season that affected the Amazon in the second half of 2024. The territorial extension affected by fire is accounted for the satellite only at the beginning of the dry period, when there is less cloud concentration in the sky, ” stated.

“The areas on alert of deforestation in the Amazon identified by the Inpe Deter System in the 1st semester of 2025 suffered a strong influence on the fires in the biome between August and October 2024.
“From January to June 2025, areas on alert of ‘deforestation with vegetation’, which correspond to places hit by fire, grew 266% compared to the same period of the previous year. The increase is connected to the atypical season of fires that affected the Amazon in the second half of 2024. sky.
“The category of“ deforestation with exposed soil ”, which indicates areas affected by the shallow cut of vegetation, remained stable in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024 and reached the lowest level of the last five years. Without the increase in deforestation caused by the intensity of fire last year, aggravated by the change of climate at global level and extreme drought that extended for two consecutive years in the Amazon, Total deforestation in the first half of 2025 would have fallen 1.5% compared to 2024.
“Given the growing water deficit in the Amazon and central region of Brazil in recent years, fires have exerted greater influence on deforestation. Therefore, the federal government, along with states, municipalities, scientific community and civil society, has been active to prevent and combat fires and implement a governance that transforms Brazil into a resilient country to fire. 65.8% in burned areas and 46.4% in the number of heat outbreaks in the national territory compared to the first half of last year.).
“In addition, the monitoring and inspection actions provided for in the PPCDAM (Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon) and carried out by the IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) and ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation) are followed in full.
“The fall in deforestation in the Cerrado in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous period is a reflection of actions implemented by the federal government with the states that make up the biome. The interfederative pact for the prevention and control of illegal deforestation and forest fires in the Cerrado Biome of the states of Matopiba (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia) signed in April 2024. actions to combat illegal deforestation and increase the rigor for the release of vegetation suppression authorizations in the biome, provided by state governments”.
