Five people were injured in Pamplon. Despite the resistance of conservationists and regular injuries, this tradition is one of the greatest summer attractions of Spain.
Five people suffered injuries during Saturday’s run with bulls within the ceremony of St. Firmina in the Spanish Pamplon. Four of them were taken to the hospital, one treated on the spot. Informed about the public service television RTVE, writes TASR.
The sixth run of this year’s event took place on the traditional narrow and winding route of just over 800 meters, which leads the old town to the arena. During it, there were several falls and collisions, as the track was extremely crowded and many participants could not avoid other runners who fell. Most of the participants are men who try to run before or alongside six bulls, often trying to touch them on the corners or back, DPA recalls.
The festival takes place every year in honor of the patron saint of the city and its history dates back to the 16th century. The celebrations also include concerts, parades or religious processions. However, the highlight is running. In recent years, however, it has been regularly accompanied by protests of animal conservation. Activists call it “cruelty from the Middle Ages” and claim that it should stop immediately. Nevertheless, the festival will attract thousands of visitors from all over the world every summer. Dozens of thousands of runners are injured every year during the run. Since 1924, 16 people died in these runs, with the last death occurring in 2009.
