An island is around 1000 kilometers from the Norwegian mainland – between the Greenlandsee and the European North Sea – which is mainly populated by seabirds and seals. 17 people live on the island of Jan Mayen, in the infrastructure of which the Norwegian government is now investing 1.5 billion crowns (around 127 million euros). But what interest is Norway in the area, which has been glashed at a third and on which the northernmost active volcano in the world – the Beerenberg – is located above the sea level?
