The rates will come into force on August 1, the Republican said in two letters published on his social Truth platform, alluding to the role of Mexico in the introduction of illegal drugs in the United States and the EU commercial imbalance, respectively. The letters were sent to Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum and to the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen.

“The United States has imposed fees on Mexico to deal with the fentanyl crisis of our nation, which is partly caused by Mexico’s failure to stop the cartels, which are composed of the most negligible people who have ever walked on the earth, to dump these drugs into our country,” says the Republican in his letter.

Trump states that although Mexico helped protect the United States border, which is part of negotiations between the two countries since the beginning of the year, the achievements won have not yet been enough. “Mexico has not yet been able to stop the cartels that try to turn all North America into a drug trafficking playground. Obviously, I can’t allow this to happen!” The Republican said in the document.

Already in the message sent to the president of the European Commission, Trump said that the letter demonstrates the “strength and commitment” of the United States to maintain their business relations with the European bloc, even with the commercial deficits faced across the country.

“We had years to discuss our business relationship with the European Union and concluded that we should get away from these persistent and prolonged commercial deficits caused by tariff and non -tariff policies from the European Union. Our relationship has been unfortunately far from reciprocal,” the republican says in the letter.
