Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) defended on Sunday (13) that amnesty to convicted by criminal acts of January 8 would be the way to “restore peace” in Brazil and a way to solve the open crisis with the United States after the announcement of 50% tariffs on Brazilian products.

“The time is urgent, the sanctions come into force on August 1st. The solution is in the hands of the Brazilian authorities. If there is harmony and independence between the powers, the forgiveness between siblings is born and, with amnesty, peace to the economy,” said Bolsonaro.
The surcharge was announced by US President Donald Trump and is expected to take effect on August 1. The measure was formalized in a letter sent directly to the Brazilian president. In the document, Trump also criticizes Bolsonaro’s trial by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), classifying him as an “international shame.”
After the announcement, opposition parliamentarians began to argue that a possible solution would be to guide the amnesty project in the National Congress. However, the proposal faces resistance from the ruling base, which rules out the possibility of voting on the subject.
Still during his statement, Bolsonaro said he did not rejoice in the imposition of the tariff:
“I do not rejoice to see personal sanctions, or family, whoever it is. I do not happy to see our producers from the countryside or the city, as well as the people, to suffer from this 50%tariff,” he said.
According to him, the letter sent by Trump has not only economic character, but also represents a position on freedom.
“Everyone knows how the head of the world’s largest power negotiates. Notarly, his deputy said in Europe that he would no longer put resources from the US taxpayer to defend countries that set aside values common to their peoples,” Bolsonaro said.
Lula reacts and reinforces Brazilian sovereignty
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) also spoke on the subject. On Saturday (12), through social networks, he said that Brazil will adopt measures to protect its population and its productive sectors in the face of the sanctions imposed by Washington.
“Brazilian justice needs to be respected. We are a large, sovereign country, and historical diplomatic traditions with all countries. Brazil will adopt the necessary measures to protect their people and companies,” he wrote.
The statement maintains the firm tone adopted by Lula since the beginning of the crisis. On Friday (11), during an agenda in Espírito Santo, he had already signaled that, if the United States does not retreat, Brazil will respond based on the principle of reciprocity.
Digital dispute is political debate
The American reaction triggered a battle of narratives on social networks. Since last Wednesday (9), when Trump has officialized the taxation, the theme dominates the online debate.
Bolsonaro’s allies hold Lula to the measure, claiming that the alignment of the Brazilian government with Brics countries and the former president’s trial would have motivated friction with the US. The hashtag #Aculpaédolula began to circulate between conservative influencers and parliamentarians.
On the other hand, government supporters say the Bolsonaro family acts for their own benefit, endangering Brazil’s image on the international scenario. As a reaction, the PT launched the #DefendaBrasil campaign, with the objective of mobilizing its base and reinforcing the discourse of defense of national sovereignty.
