Crystal clear waters, zero crowds and saw view: this Portuguese river beach is real and scenario seems out of a postcard

With temperatures climbing across the country, many seek waterfire refuges. But if the coastal beaches are filled quickly, there are quieter alternatives, and not all are known to the general public. In the North, hidden between mountains and vegetation, there is a Portuguese river beach that is already described by many as a “mini paradise”.

The forecast of the Portuguese Institute of Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) points to maxims in the order of 39 ° C in some regions, namely in Castelo Branco.

With this scenario, it seems that the weekend will be spent between dives and shadows. And for those who want to avoid crowds, there is a particular destination that deserves to be highlighted.

The secret is in the mountain

The place in question is Mexico’s river beach, located in Albufeira da Caniçada, in the middle of the parish of Cova, Vieira do Minho municipality.

Integrated in Peneda-Gerês National Park, this river beach is fitted to the Cávado River mountain landscape and, according to several users on social networks, provides a direct contact experience with nature.

“It’s an almost untouched place, with a natural surroundings that invites silence,” describes one of the videos of the content creator @viajar_emportugal.

Crystal clear water and idyllic scenario

The beach stands out for its calm and clear waters, accompanied by a light small sand and dense vegetation that offers natural shadow.

“A perfect place to turn off the world and enjoy peace,” reads one of the online publications. In addition, the beach is often pointed out as one of the most beautiful in the northern interior.

Despite the name, it has no connection to the Central American country. The origin of the “Praia do Mexico” designation is uncertain, but locally is accepted and used to identify this small hidden paradise.

Adventure Flavor Access

Part of the charm of the place is on the way. Access to the beach is made by a dirt rail with about a kilometer, which requires some effort, but makes the arrival even more rewarding.

By car, it should follow by road N103 to the S. João da Cova area, then follow the nominations for Faldrem and Bouças Ventosa.

Upon reaching the village, there is a cruise where it is possible to park. From then on, the path is made on foot, but offers panoramic views on the Cávado Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Ideal for those looking for silence

Unlike other more affordable and frequented river beaches, Mexico Beach has the advantage of maintaining a low influx, especially because it is outside the usual tourist itineraries.

According to the newspaper, it is a place that gathers more and more compliments for its beauty and tranquility, being ideal for families or couples looking for quiet.

There are no support, but there is peace

It should be borne in mind that there are no cafes or support infrastructures on site, so it is recommended to bring lunch, sun hat and water. Despite the absence of amenities, most visitors consider that the environment widely compensates for the lack of services.

Portugal, always surprising

This Portuguese river beach is another example of how Portugal continues to keep unexpected corners, perfect for those who want to rest without leaving the country. According to the official website of Tourism of Porto and North, Albufeira da Caniçada is, in itself, a zone of high landscape value, and it is also worth exploring the surroundings.

A few minutes away, there are other points of interest, such as the São Bento da Porta Sanctuary and several waterfalls accessible for marked rails.
