President Emmanuel Macron calls on Europe to strengthen the defense to threaten the continent’s safety. In the coming years, France will add EUR 6.5 billion for military expenses.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday that the government will spend an additional EUR 6.5 billion for defense expenses over the next two years. According to him, significant investments are needed, as Europe is facing the biggest threat since the end of World War II. According to him, Russia, but also terrorism and cyber attacks, is a risk for European states. TASR writes about this according to AFP and AP.

“We have been experiencing a key moment. Since 1945, freedom has never been so seriously threatened. Peace on our continent has never been independent of the decision we will now accept,” Macron said in a speech to the army on the eve of the public holiday of Bastille’s Day.

Europe in danger

According to the French President, Europe is at risk, especially for wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. He also stressed that after the arrival of US President Donald Trump, “the United States added some form of uncertainty”.

In 2027, according to him, France should invest € 64 billion in defense. “If you want them to be afraid of you, you must be strong. We are still leading, but if they don’t speed up, they’ll overtake us tomorrow,” Macron pointed out, calling on “mobilizing” all government institutions to defend the country.

Nuclear protection of Europe

The President also ordered the highest French military and defensive representatives to start a “strategic dialogue” with European partners about the potential deployment of the French nuclear arsenal to defend Europe.
