In the southeast of Spain, forcible clashes broke out on Saturday evening between local far -right groups and North African migrants. This happened after an unknown attacker attacked an older man on Wednesday. According to Reuters report, TASR reports this.

During the riots in Torre-Pacheco, five people suffered injuries and the police detained one else, the locals told Reuters. On Sunday the city was calmer, but the government sources said they expect further detention.

Tension in the city

Saturday’s violence followed a few days of minor unrest. However, the tension increased after Wednesday’s attack on an older man who is recovering from injuries at home. The motive of the attack is not yet obvious and there has been no detention of persons.

Reaction of the authorities

The Central Government representative in the Murcian region of Mario Guevara told Spanish public television that the attack is being investigated. At the same time, she condemned “hateful speeches” and “incitement to violence” and announced that other members of the Spanish Civic Guard (Guardia Civil) will be deployed.

According to local government data, almost a third of the inhabitants of Torre-Pacheca are of foreign origin.
