This was announced on Sunday by the President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen. EThis reacts to the latest decision of US President Donald Trump to move the validity of US duties up to 1 August, but also needs the last weeks to resolve the dispute, Since Trump has announced that he will introduce 30 % import duties on EU products from August. Informed DPA and AFP.

“The United States has sent us a letter of measures that will come into effect if the deadline (1 August) is not reached,” the European Commission head told reporters, saying that Brussels also prolongs the deadline during which it does not apply its retaliatory duties until early August. At the same time, it will continue to prepare countermeasures.

According to von Der Leyen, the European Union “has always made it clear that it favors the solutions obtained by negotiations. This continues to apply, so we want to take advantage of the rest of the time we remain by August 1“She added.

The latest extension of the deadline concerns retaliatory measures to US products that the EU introduced in April after the announcement of Trump from March to impose duties on European steel and aluminum. TRUMP then announced at the beginning of April reciprocal duties, but subsequently postponed until 9 July, which the EU responded to the same postponement of countermeasures until 14 July.

Earlier this week, however, Trump began sending letters to a planned increase in tariffs, while Washington decided to take the deadline for the duties to take place from 9 July to 1 August. This also applies to the European Union, since on Saturday (12 July) Trump announced that he sent the EC to the EU head a letter in which the EU draws alert for the planned introduction of 30 % duties from August 1. He cited a high commercial deficit as a reason, which he believes pose a threat to national security.
