Accompanied by the first lady, Melania Trump and FIFA president, Trump used the sporting event as a diplomatic platform: during the match, a meeting with Qatar representatives was scheduled to deal with peace negotiations in the Gaza Strip.
According to Steve Witkoff, a special government envoy, the president is “hopeful” for a ceasefire soon in the region. The meetings occur days after Trump intensifies their involvement in international topics, including the global sports scene.
Despite the diplomatic agenda, the presence of the republican at the stadium was marked by boos from the public, who reacted negatively when his image appeared in the screens during the execution of the United States National Anthem. Safety on site was reinforced, with additional blockages, presence of sniffer dogs and intensified magazine – measures that had not been adopted in previous tournament matches.
Trump’s trip to the World Cup happens exactly one year after he survived a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Despite the symbolic date, the president did not schedule public honors, merely participating in an interview recorded for Fox News, aired on Saturday (12).
Since the beginning of his term, Trump has been using major sporting events as part of his public agenda. This year, he has been at Super Bowl, Daytona 500, UFC struggles and the University Lighting Championships (NCAA). He maintains a close relationship with Gianni Infantino and said he intends to closely monitor the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in North America and will feature 48 teams.
