(Bloomberg) – The United Kingdom intends to launch new incentives to make the purchase of electric vehicles more affordable, while the labor government seeks to gradually eliminate the sale of polluting cars.
In an interview on Sunday, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed that he will announce measures to increase sales of electric vehicles later this week, but has avoided directly commenting on Telegraph and Times reports, which point to incentives up to £ 700 million (about $ 5.26 billion) in subsidies and aid for buyers, with the aim of reducing costs.
“We will make it cheaper for those who want to make the transition to electric vehicles,” she told BBC.

As part of these initiatives, Alexander’s office announced on Sunday an investment of £ 63 million (R $ 473 million) for the installation of recharge points in homes and logistics centers by the UK, including resources for recharging points in unpaid homes. The department also detailed a program of £ 2.5 billion (R $ 18.8 billion) to support automakers in the transition to the manufacture of zero emission vehicles.
These investments are part of the government’s efforts to increase electric vehicle sales, which on average cost more than double gasoline cars. The United Kingdom is the largest electric vehicle market in Europe and the government has established a period of 2030 to completely eliminate the sale of gas and diesel -powered cars, and 2035 for the end of hybrids.
Sales statistics show that automakers are being behind the goals set by the government to increase the participation of electric vehicles before these deadlines. Companies attribute this lag to consumers concern at the high cost of electric vehicles and the lack of recharge points.
