“Freedom has never been so threatened” since the end of World War II, said the French president. If approved, reinforcement in defense will double the French expenses in this area.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that “ Freedom has never been so threatened“Since the end of World War II in 1945, and“ never peace ”in Europe“ depended so much on current decisions ”of the rulers.

In a discourse directed at the Armed Forces, on the eve of the French national feast, Macron evoked “imperialism and attachment powers,” such as Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and lamented that the United States “added a kind of uncertainty.”

“Never like peace on our continent today depended so much on our current decisions,” he said.

According to the French head of state, the international order established after World War II is increasingly fragile and, “as there are no more rules, the law of the strongest prevails.”

For Emmanuel Macron, France needs to “face many challenges to stay free, owner of its destination.” However, “To be feared, it must be powerful”pointed out.

Macron is intended to reinforce by 2027 the defense budget with 6.5 billion euros, to total 64 billion euros.

If the French government can approve the new endow of 6.5 billion euros in two years in the National Assembly, the French expenses with defense will have doubled in a decadeof 32 billion in 2017, when Macron took office, to 64 billion in 2027.

According to Macron, additional resources are intended to finance reserves of ammunition, precision weapons, drones, “spatial capacities”, but also the “necessary equipment in everyday life for operations to be performed”-but the French head of state ensured that the Extraordinary expense in defense will not be funded with the issuance of public debt.

Supplementary funds will also be used to increase land and air defense and electronic war.

To the military, the French president promised better salaries. “To be free in this world, we have to be feared. To be feared, we have to be powerful,” he said, insisting that France can find money to spend more with the Armed Forces even when he tries to reduce debt.

Conservative and far right parties have supported greater expenses in defense, while leftist parties accuse the government to sacrifice social benefits for military spending.
