Its security service (SBU) announced on Sunday that it killed agents allegedly firing their deadly colleague in Kiev earlier in the week, directly accusing Russia’s federal security service (FSB) for organizing the attack.
SBU officer Ivan Voronic fell dead on Thursday morning in Kiev, in a murder that authorities described in CNN as a targeted execution.
According to a SBU announcement, the two suspects – a man and a woman – attempted to hide after the armed attack. However, officials from the Security Service and the National Police have found their hideout in the wider Kiev region.
SBU chief Vasil Maliuk said: “As a result of disguised investigations and active back -up actions, the enemy’s hideout was discovered.”
Describing the clash, he added: “During the arrest they resisted, there was a fire exchange and the criminals were exterminated.”
According to SBU, the two had been instructed to attend their goal to find out his daily routine. They then led them to a hideout where they were waiting for a muffler pistol.
SBU is Ukraine’s main security service responsible for internal security but also for sabotage against Russia – including the recent bold attack with drones at Russian airports last month.
The murder of Boronic is noted at a time when Moscow is stepping up its attacks on Ukraine: this week both the largest and second largest drones attack since the beginning of the conflict, which is already in its fourth year, were recorded.
