The case, reported by the magazine, draws attention to the risks of invasive procedures in nasal cornets, especially when performed without proper clarification and proper medical follow -up.
Empty nose syndrome occurs when there is Excessive removal of nasal cornets – Structures that humidify, warm and filter inhaled air – during surgeries such as turbinectomy.
Although the objective of the procedure is to relieve respiratory difficulties, its reckless execution can cause serious side effects such as intense pain, sensation of suffocation, extreme nasal dryness and bleeding.
Emmanuelle’s drama began during the pandemia, when I was five months pregnant and was diagnosed with a severe gestational rhinitis. Without a history of respiratory diseases, he began to suffer from high sleep and high blood pressure apnea, which prevented her from using decongestants.
After no improvements with corticosteroid treatment, it was advised by an otolaryngologist to undergo nasal cornets surgery, together with a septoplasty.
Despite promises of immediate improvement, Emmanuelle woke up from surgery with intense pain and a burning sensation inside the nose.
The postoperative period was marked by great physical suffering and by absence of clear responses by the responsible doctor. During pregnancy, he sought other professionals, faced two infections and, due to persistent pain, had to resort to antibiotics and corticosteroids.
After delivery, in March 2021, the situation got worse. Exposure to air -conditioned environments now causes unbearable facial burning, seriously affecting its quality of life.
Unable to work, study, or perform simple housework, Emmanuelle found that most of his nasal cornets had been removed, which led to the diagnosis of SNV.
Although rare, the condition can affect between 8% and 20% of patients undergoing similar surgeriesaccording to scientific studies. Emmanuelle would later find groups of victims with similar reports in various regions of Brazil, but the country still does not have official data on the prevalence of this syndrome.
There is no cure definitive for SNV. Experimental surgeries have been tested with silicone grafts, synthetic cartilage or cartilage taken from the rib, but the results are uncertain and sometimes negative.
To date, the only available treatments are palliative, such as humidifiers, gel nursing and neuropathic pain medications.
Beyond physical limitations, Emmanuelle developed anxiety e depression – Frequent conditions between patients with SNV. “The body asks for rest and cannot sleep. This destroys physical and mental health,” he says.
