Each country has a dish that it can call its showcase. In Italy it is a pizza, in the United States hamburgers, while Poland, many foreign tourists associate primarily with dumplings. The Taste Atlas online culinary guide has prepared a ranking of the oldest dishes in the world, it did not lack a Polish accent.
One of the oldest dishes that appeared in the ranking of Taste Atlas is from the first century soy saucewhich comes from ancient China. A real surprise may be from the same period sauerkrautalthough it is associated with German and Polish cuisine, it began to be prepared in ancient Rome. Japanese samurai, already in the 7th century Miso soupwhich is based on a fermented soybean paste. However, one of the oldest Indian cuisine from the eighth century is dosai.e. a thin, crunchy pancake made of fermented rice and lentil cake.
In the 9th century, the inhabitants of Ukraine ate traditional borscht, while the most famous Hungarian dish, i.e. stewappeared in the 10th century. On the other hand, dishes such as couscousi.e. fine porridge from Durum wheat, which was initially eaten in Morocco and Algeria, and hummuspaste from chickpeas and tahini, which comes from Syria.
However, they belong to the oldest Spanish dishes empanadasi.e. stuffed dumplings that appeared in the 16th century. Interestingly, the hair began to eat pizza only in the 18th century, while ice-creamItalian ice cream, probably appeared in the 16th century. One of the Austrian cuisine that enjoy the longest tradition is Tort Linzeri.e. tart on shortcrust pastry with the addition of nuts and raspberries from the 17th century. The French representative of the ranking is reminiscent of shells Magdalenek cookieswhich appeared on the tables in the 18th century.
Polish also included in the ranking pierogiwhich were to gain popularity in the 17th century. It is worth adding that some sources say that it was the 13th century. Interestingly, although it cannot be denied that this is one of the most popular Polish dishes, the initial recipe was created outside our country.
The oldest and at the same time the youngest dish in this ranking is American hamburgerswhich appeared in the United States in the 19th century.
With cabbage and mushrooms, cheese, meat, or maybe in the holiday version, i.e. with blueberries and cream? Pierogi This is a dish that most Poles love, and as a nation we often attribute its origin. It is worth adding, however, that dumplings in various forms and form can be found in many cuisines in the world. They are popular in Ukrainian, Russian, Italian, German and even Chinese and it was probably in the Far East that the first dumplings began to be made. It is believed that the recipe for dumplings was to be brought to Poland from Ukrainian Kiev by bishop Jacek Odrowąż.
